Dr Farry was speaking after meeting with Labour Brexit spokesperson Sir Keir Starmer. He said an Alliance delegation stressed the need for clarity around the Single Market and Customs Union from the official Opposition, as well as the UK Government.
“Brexit is a serious challenge to the economic future of Northern Ireland and our political and social cohesion,” he said.
“We were keen to impress upon Mr Starmer the importance of a robust approach from the Opposition in challenging Brexit and in particular addressing the implications for Northern Ireland.
“We stressed both the Government and Opposition need to be clear on the requirements to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland. This is either the UK as part of a Customs Union with the EU and continuing to participate in the Single Market through the European Economic Area, or a special deal is worked out in relation to both for Northern Ireland.
“Any ambiguity or shortcomings will not realise this objective and will compromise north-south co-operation, the all-island economy and the future economic prospects of Northern Ireland.”
