Dickson to lead European election monitoring team in Armenia

Alliance East Antrim MLA Stewart Dickson will lead an election monitoring team from the Council of Europe during the Assembly Elections in Armenia’s capital Yerevan on 5th May.

Stewart will head an eight strong team of a Committee of the Regions group that will monitor the elections to make sure they are carried out in a fair and accurate process.

Stewart Dickson MLA said: “Armenia has made great progress in developing a western style democratic system in the 22 years since it gained independence after the collapse of the former Soviet Union. However there have been concerns about the election process.

“In the recent Armenian Presidential election, international observers highlighted the withdrawal of several candidates who were concerned about the fairness of the election.

“I previously took part in the European Congress monitoring team that witnessed local elections in Kosovo in October last year. I got to see first-hand the progress that can be made by having free and fair elections. I also saw the importance of having independent international elections monitors to ensure that this takes place.

“We take it for granted that free, fair and open elections will take place in Northern Ireland, however, in many countries around the world, this is not the case.

“I hope that the election monitoring team that I lead will play a part in making sure that this and future Armenian elections are free and fair.”
