The consultation document outlines recommendations which would make parade organisers responsible for the dignity and discipline of all parading participants. Parade organisers will also contact places of worship along parade routes to avoid the disruption of services. The consumption of alcohol and illegal substances will be actively discouraged.
Stewart Dickson MLA said: “The Maiden City Accord is a positive step forward. Parading in Londonderry has seen many constructive developments in recent years and a lot can certainly be learnt from what has been achieved to date.
“I particularly welcome the proposal to make parade organisers responsible for the dignity and discipline of all participants.
“We had a peaceful 12th July this year, however, there is still a lot of work that could be done to avoid disruption and reduce the potential for unrest.
“This could act as a model for parading throughout Northern Ireland. I hope that the Orange Order will look to implement it elsewhere.”
