Organised by Tidy NI, the award aims to acknowledge beaches which meet guideline water quality standards and are prized for their natural unspoilt environment.
Councillor Patrick Clarke said: “This is excellent news, another great tourism boost for the Newcastle area.
“To achieve this award, Murlough Beach had to prove it had excellent water quality, litter and waste was under control, it was safe and that the beach was managed effectively. I want to warmly praise all those involved in the upkeep of this beach. This award is a just reward for all their efforts.
“Our beaches are constantly at risk from pollution and we all need to ensure we do our bit as guardians to keep all our local beaches clean.”
