Alliance Health Spokesperson Paula Bradshaw has welcomed news that the Attorney General has directed a fresh inquest into the death of Claire Roberts in 1996, having met the family just before Easter.
The South Belfast MLA stated: “It will come as considerable relief to Claire Roberts’ family that a fresh inquest will now be conducted. This indicates that the Attorney General is of the opinion that there is more to gain by a coroner looking again at the death. After 22 long years, this is the least friends and family deserve.
“I had contacted the Attorney General and the Chief Constable after meeting the family before Easter, and I am entirely convinced of their case. More importantly, it is clear that so is Sir John O’Hara QC, who stated clearly in the Hyponatraemia Inquiry Report that he believed the relevant finding to be wrong.
“There remains considerable uncertainty about what happened to Claire Roberts, and it is long past time her family had access to the truth.”
