Alliance Health spokesperson Paula Bradshaw MLA has welcomed the launch of a consultation on statutory opt-out for organ donation.
Health Minister Robin Swann launched the consultation, which will seek the views of the public on how to introduce a soft opt-out system, changing from the current method of opt-in, where organ donation only proceeds if the person has given their express consent for it or if the family makes the decision on their behalf.
“Yet again Northern Ireland has been left behind by other devolved legislatures on this matter, so it is welcome there is at least this movement now,” said Ms Bradshaw.
“I am personally strongly of the view soft opt-out should have been implemented long ago, but I would urge anyone regardless of their opinion to engage with the consultation process to make sure the system is the best it can be.
“I would also urge the Department to make preparations to move quickly with the consultation response so any necessary legislation can be passed during the current Assembly mandate.”
