Alliance Health spokesperson Paula Bradshaw MLA has welcomed the instruction to local Trusts to pause mesh procedures in Northern Ireland.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Michael McBride is advising such a pause, which follows the NHS in England putting a halt to operations after concerns over safety.
“I contacted the Department of Health this morning the emphasise there is no reason to believe there are any circumstances in Northern Ireland which differ from those in England, where mesh procedures are now suspended until March.
“On that basis, the only decision available in Northern Ireland was to extend the suspension which applies in England and, in effect, also in Scotland.
“I look forward to continuing to work for a more thorough solution to the issue to ensure procedures with dangerous side effects are no longer relied upon.”
