Alliance Health spokesperson Paula Bradshaw MLA has welcomed news the Department of Health will be providing further funding to foster carers.

A total of £754, 800 will be provided. There are currently around 2,600 children and young people in foster or kinship care in Northern Ireland.

“This additional support will go a small way towards alleviating the additional pressures placed on foster carers throughout the pandemic,” said Ms Bradshaw.

“With the closure of schools, youth facilities and other support services, many foster children will be feeling isolated and this can put a strain on relationships. I have been extremely concerned about the additional responsibility placed on foster carers and have consistently called on the Health Minister to provide more assistance.

“Financial stress can also be hugely damaging to the mental health of a household and this money should ensure the needs of children and young people are met.

“I am grateful to all those foster cares who are providing such loving support every day. The emotional impact of COVID-19 on those they look after has been difficult and I know the stability a foster carer gives will have been hugely impactful.

“I welcome this funding and hope it is a sign of greater recognition from the Department of Health for the contribution of foster carers and their family circles.”
