Attacks show we can’t be complacent about prison safety: Bell

ALLIANCE Deputy Leader and Victims Spokesperson Eileen Bell has met with senior officers from the Prison Officers’ Association.

Speaking afterwards, Eileen Bell said: “Today’s letter bomb attacks on a prison and young offenders centre illustrate clearly why we cannot be complacent about the safety and security of prison officers and prisoners.

“I had a useful discussion with the Prison Officers’ Association about Maghaberry prison and the security of prison officers at home. Alliance will support officers and families to ensure that they are properly protected and are safe in their homes.

“I will be writing to the Minister to seek assurances that adequate and appropriate resources are provided to improve security.”

Mrs Bell said she would be closely watching implementation of the new prison compact.

“It is essential that the situation is not allowed to deteriorate in the same way the Maze did. Although there is concern, I am hopeful that the new arrangements will be better for both the safety of prisoners and staff.”
