Alliance MLA Kellie Armstrong has welcomed news the current Covid-19 self-isolation grant is set to be enhanced.

The Alliance Party’s Communities spokesperson was speaking after the Minister revealed the improved scheme will increase the daily allowance payable and extend the number of days for which a grant can be awarded.

She said: “Whilst Northern Ireland has again lagged behind the rest of the UK when it comes to changes to this grant being rolled out, I’m delighted to see this news today for all who are in need.

“This move will allow those on low incomes, who have to self-isolate, the financial means to do so, rather than forcing them into a situation that sees them deleting the app rather than fear the track and trace system.

“News of possible vaccines in recent days has given us all a boost, but we aren’t out of the woods yet and must continue to take all precautions necessary to protect those around us.”
