Alliance Leader Naomi Long recently facilitated a Book of Commitment from the Holocaust Educational Trust to be placed in Parliament Buildings, allowing it to be signed by MLAs across the chamber, while the party’s Executive spokesperson Stewart Dickson said remembering the events of the past was a fundamental way to combat hatred today.
“Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on January 27, the date the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated by Allied forces during the Second World War. This year’s theme is ‘How can life go on?’ which is an important aspect for everyone to think about their own responsibilities.
“It is particularly vital in today’s world, where we see echoes of fascism and the far right across the globe. Although the events of the Holocaust may seem long ago, intolerance needs to be challenged at every turn in order to ensure similar actions do not happen again.”
