The Alliance Party has selected Peter McReynolds to replace the late Mervyn Jones as Councillor for Ormiston in East Belfast.
Following the shock death of Councillor Jones earlier this month, Peter – who is well-known in the constituency through his work with Naomi Long MLA – said he was ‘beyond proud’ to be following in the footsteps of his former colleague, adding he would deliver on Mervyn’s commitment to Alliance and his desire to see a shared future realised.
He added: “Mervyn Jones wasn’t just a colleague, he was a friend to everyone and an integral part of Alliance, especially our East Belfast team, who always stood firm in the courage of his convictions.
“I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to serve the people of Ormiston and to be joining the pro-active Alliance team on Belfast City Council. As the third largest party, Alliance has effectively delivered for all citizens of Belfast, ensuring a fairer and welcoming society.
“Across Northern Ireland, Alliance is growing in strength and this strength begins at local government level. I relish the opportunity to get to work with my new colleagues, building a shared society based on respect, free from sectarianism and inclusive to all.”
