Alliance MLA Paula Bradshaw has said the apology to victims of historical institutional abuse, delivered on behalf of the Executive by Ministers from all five parties, is an emotional day for all affected.

The South Belfast MLA was speaking ahead of the apology to victims and survivors, which will be delivered by Ministers and representatives of the institutions were abuse took place, at the Assembly.

“This apology is long overdue, coming over five years after the recommendations of the Inquiry chaired by the late Sir Anthony Hart, and my first thoughts are with those victims who sadly did not live to hear it,” said Ms Bradshaw.

“Nevertheless, this is a hugely emotional day for those who have campaigned so long not just for an apology, but fundamentally for recognition. The dark shadow of historical institutional abuse and of the physical, emotional and sexual harm caused to so many people in their most formative years continues to hang over us all.

“While the apology will be welcome, it is also an extremely difficult day while victims, and society as a whole, continue to struggle to come to terms with the legacy of what happened.

“While this is a significant step, there remains a lot more to do to deal with and compensate for the legacy. For too long, victims have not been a sufficient priority. My thoughts are with them all today, and they can be assured of my and our continued support.”
