Alliance Leader Naomi Long MLA has paid tribute to the families of victims and to survivors of Bloody Sunday, on the 50th anniversary of the massacre.

A number of Alliance representatives, including the party’s Deputy Leader Stephen Farry MP and local elected representatives, participated in today’s memorial service in the Bogside – the area of Derry-Londonderry where 13 people were shot dead by the Parachute Regiment on January 30, 1972.

“My first thought as always on days like this are with the families of the victims who lost their lives on Bloody Sunday and with those who survived but still bear the physical and emotional scars of what they experienced on that day,” said Mrs Long.

“They have faced a long and arduous journey over the years in pursuit of justice and truth for their loved ones, and recognition of the terrible and tragic events of January 30, 1972. Throughout they have carried themselves with dignity, and their resilience and determination have inspired others who also seek truth and justice for their loved ones.

“Bloody Sunday was one of the worst days in the history of this city and wider Northern Ireland. As we move forward, we must remember the wrongs and the pain inflicted on so many and the lives lost, and seek to honour their memory by ensuring we never allow the events of our dark history to be repeated.”
