East Belfast Alliance Councillor Ross McMullan has welcomed the launch of the ‘We The 15’ campaign which has launched ahead of the Paralympic Games.
The campaign – led by the International Paralympic Committee and International Disability Alliance – aims to be the ‘biggest human rights movement’ in history, transforming the lives of the 1.2 billion people around the world – 15 percent of the planet’s population – living with a disability.
At Councillor McMullan’s request Belfast City Hall will join over 125 other buildings across the world in lighting up purple to mark the launch of the campaign.
He said: “We have been pushing for Belfast City Council to take a greater lead in to meet the Council’s Belfast Agenda objective of being an accessible and inclusive city for everyone by 2035.
“Campaigns like WeThe15 which call for disability visibility, accessibility and inclusion are so important in generating momentum to deliver greater disability rights across the world, including here in Belfast.
“I hope the platform this campaign provides will highlight the barriers disabled people face here and get all stakeholders to take urgent action to deliver an accessible and inclusive city and Northern Ireland for everyone.”
