Alliance Councillor Michael Long has said we must never forget the sacrifice of those who died at the Battle of the Somme, as he attended a special commemoration event in Belfast today.
He said: “July 1, is about remembering the sacrifice of the more than 3,500 soldiers from the 36th and 16th divisions who lost their lives. What they gave must never be forgotten.
“Today we might not have been able to mark this day as we traditionally would due to current restrictions, but I’m glad we had the opportunity to reflect in an official way on all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
“As we move forward it is essential we ensure these commemorations are recognised in a shared way, open to everyone and never forget at the centre is honouring the young men who did not return from the battlefields.”
