South Belfast Alliance MLA Paula Bradshaw has stated more must be done to enforce by-laws in the Holyland area after residents faced disturbances over the weekend.
Ms Bradshaw said the disturbances, which came at the start of Freshers’ Week, are “totally unacceptable”.
“The noise and the mess that occurs every year at this time shows a disrespect for people who make their home in the Holyland and just want to get on with their lives without disturbance, and also reflects poorly on the universities.
“I have been in continued contact with residents in the area, and will once again seek answers from Belfast City Council and the PSNI on the enforcement of by-laws concerning noise and on-street drinking. No one minds a bit of fun, but it must be responsible and respectful towards those living nearby.
“I will continue throughout the coming days to represent the residents, who have every right to demand their lives should not be disturbed in this way. Queen’s University has assured me its welfare officers are calling out at a number of properties today, but this is a perennial problem and it will require a different approach.”
