Problem with Belfast bin collection is being resolved – O’Neill

Alliance Councillor Sian O’Neill has said Belfast City Council is working to rectify the current issues with bin collections.

Councillor O’Neill said: “Belfast City Council has been working for many months to ensure the biggest change in refuse collection schedules in 15 years went smoothly. Unfortunately, due to a serious issue with a delivery contractor, thousands of homes across Belfast either did not receive information or received incorrect information.

“Alliance Councillors have received an assurance from the Chief Executive that an investigation into the delivery issues will be conducted.

“We have also received reassurances that extra squads of bin lorry operatives will be working throughout this week to empty all black bins. They will then focus on the recovery of brown bins, then blue bins.

“The council has also suspended any enforcement regarding the use of additional black bin bags. These bin bags will be picked up by street cleansers to take the pressure off bin lorries, so may not be collected at the same time.

“Any householder wishing detailed information can contact the Council’s customer service line on 028 9027 0230 or check the website at www.belfastcity.gov.uk/bins-recycling/bins/bincollections.aspx

“We are incredibly disappointed that this situation has taken place and we are fully aware of the confusion that has resulted from the lack of clear communication, but we are satisfied that BCC is doing all it can to rectify the situation as quickly as possible. Hopefully once all homes receive an updated mailing this week, it will clarify this situation.”
