The Strangford MLA was speaking as Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard announced an investment of £10 million to resurface around 1,000 rural roads. Work is due to begin immediately.
“Today’s announcement of an investment is a welcome move,” said Ms Armstrong.
“However, it is not enough to simply fix roads when they have fallen into a state of disrepair. If the Minister has a strategic plan which is forward-thinking, it will ensure effective and efficient road maintenance so not as much public money will need to be spent on repair in future.
“People in rural areas are aware of the neglect their roads have seen over the years. It is about time these roads got the support needed to make them both better and safer.”
