Speaking during the full December meeting of Belfast City Council, Councillor McNamee said the establishment of a working group would promote visibility, training and development opportunities for the black, minority and ethnic community.
Councillor Laura McNamee said: “The Council is always looking for ways to promote diversity and I believe we have a fantastic opportunity here to promote the black, minority and ethnic community.
“We have previously had similar success with the introduction of a women’s steering group and there is no greater proof of this achievement than the fact we have women holding the top positions on both our existing and shadow Council.
“I am keen for us to achieve a similar level of success through full implementation of the existing race action plan by increasing the level of representation of people of a BME background within Council.
“I believe that by establishing a network for our existing employees, they will have a platform from which they can network, promote visibility, training and development opportunities, as well as mentoring and employment opportunities in the interests of reflecting the diverse composition of the city which we serve.
“Belfast is rich in diversity – something that should be celebrated across all traditions and cultures. Agreeing to this motion gives Belfast City Council the opportunity to lead by example and I hope other parties will give consideration to how they can reflect on this in their own parties.”
