Lunn welcomes decision to save rural school

Alliance Education spokesperson Trevor Lunn MLA has welcomed the Education Minister’s decision to allow St Mary’s High in Brollagh, Fermanagh to remain open while the possibility of a cross border solution is explored.

Trevor Lunn MLA said: “St Mary’s is extremely isolated in Northern Ireland terms being 25 miles from the nearest alternatives in Enniskillen, but only 3 miles from Ballyshannon or 6 miles from Bundoran.

“The Minister favours solutions along the border which could be beneficial to pupils in both jurisdictions and the opportunity is there for St Mary’s, in cooperation with the schools in those towns to be a pilot scheme for a sharing arrangement.

“The Minister has therefore granted time for a proper discussion with his Southern counterpart and the St Mary’s parents, to whom the school is, apart from anything else a vital part of community life, will be delighted.

“The Alliance Party supports the concept of a border corridor where innovative solutions can be looked at and await further developments.”
