Cllr Barney Fitzpatrick said: “This is great news that one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events will be coming to the North Coast. I know many people have been keeping their fingers crossed about the possibility of the Open taking place in Portrush and I am sure that this positive news will delight the local community.
“Credit must go to all involved in the Royal Portrush club for securing the tournament. The successful Irish Open in 2012 obviously showed that Portrush is capable of hosting such a large event.
“I know our local golfers have also lobbied for the Open to come to Northern Ireland, and I hope that one of them will win it on home soil.”
