Long commends flood prevention work

East Belfast MP Naomi Long has commended efforts of those working to prevent potential flooding in Sydenham tomorrow but reiterated her warning that people there should remain cautious despite a feared flooding due to a tidal surge on Friday not occurring.

The Alliance MP, who has worked alongside her party colleagues, emergency services and residents in delivering sandbags and ensuring those in need are helped, said due to the ever-changing nature of weather, a safety first approach was the best option for locals.
“I met with Sydenham residents on Friday and saw first-hand the efforts in place to protect lives and property in the area, and offered help where required, whilst my Alliance colleagues have also been helping with the delivery of sandbags of those who need them. In addition, we have received assurances from several local churches who have offered their premises if needed in an emergency situation.
“However, although tomorrow is currently expected to have similar tidal conditions to Friday, the stronger on-shore winds and heavy rain forecast could potentially cause problems. I would, therefore, urge residents to collect any additional sandbags they may need from Palmerston Road Civic Amenity site from 10am Monday and, in the meantime, continue to listen to the advice given out by the agencies in relation to flooding.
“It is probably a sensible precaution to move valuables upstairs where possible and, if living in the affected area, keep a bag packed in case evacuation is required. Hopefully, the defences will not be breached, but it is best to prepare, just in case.
“I would also repeat the warning to not remove sandbags from points in the city where they have been placed to prevent water breaching defences, as to do so places every home in danger.”
