Clarke concerned at reports Newcastle PSNI station could face closure

Alliance Councillor Patrick Clarke has said he is deeply concerned over recent reports Newcastle PSNI station could face closure.

A local Councillor for the area, Mr Clarke said he would be writing to the Chief Inspector for clarification on the issue.

Councillor Patrick Clarke said: “I am very concerned at reports Newcastle PSNI station could be under threat of closure. This is a vital resource in the town and I would not like to see it lost.

“Newcastle is a popular attraction for tourists in Northern Ireland and often sees an increase in population at varying times of the year. With this in mind it is essential police services are secured, not scaled back, ensuring the rule of law is always respected.

“Over recent years there have been a number of police station closures within Down District which ultimately leads to policing on a limited basis. It is absolutely necessary to have a full time police station in Newcastle due to the large geographical area that the station covers as well as Newcastle.

“I understand the decision to close the station or not comes under the remit of the Chief Inspector and I will be writing to her as soon as possible to highlight the need for Newcastle PSNI station.”
