Located at arguably one of the busiest traffic-flow intersections in East Belfast, the main entrance to Campbell College sits adjacent to a roundabout connecting four arterial routes, two of which are roads with speed limits of 40mph and over.
While in recent years the Department for Regional Development has provided a significant amount of funding for signage and other measures under the Travelwise NI Safer Routes to School (SRS) programme, Judith has been in correspondence with the Minister to raise the number of near misses reported and request that his department reassess road safety options for the area.
Judith Cochrane MLA said: “While road safety measures to protect drivers and pedestrians are of vital importance to ensure the wellbeing of all those using our roadways and footpaths, nowhere is the more significant than in the vicinity of our local schools.
“As a mother of two, I understand that the safety of our children and young people must be a priority in any infrastructure and transport considerations, and so I am grateful to the Minister for meeting with me and taking the time to see for himself the particular dangers in these areas.
“I have also been in on-going communication with both Roads Service and the PSNI with respect to speeding and traffic management in the area around Greenwood Primary School, also located on a main arterial route, and as a result the school has been added to the Safer Routes to School scheme.”
