Police are investigating the attack which took place in the Rathkyle area of Stiles between 6pm and 7.15pm on Sunday night.
Councillor Neil Kelly said: “I am appalled at this horrific attack and my thoughts are with the victim at this difficult time.
“It is unacceptable that this attack was able to take place in early evening and I would urge anyone who may have seen something to come forward and contact the PSNI.
“Attacks like this send a wave of fear across the community and the perpetrator must be taken off our streets immediately and dealt with before the courts.
“I would urge everyone in Antrim to remain vigilant and stay safe as it starts to get darker earlier by staying with friends or taking a taxi rather than walking alone.”
