Alliance campaigns to have Antrim Forum and other services open on Sundays

Antrim Alliance Councillor Neil Kelly is working to have Sunday openings at the Antrim Forum and other services, like the recycling centres. His comments come following the announcement of a consultation by Minister Alex Attwood on Sunday opening for shops.

Cllr Neil Kelly said: “I have had many enquires as to why council facilities are not open on Sundays or are only open from 2pm.

“Members of the gym facility at the Antrim Forum are asking why their gym is closed on Sunday mornings when others are open. People in the area are also concerned as to why they cannot use the amenity centre on Sundays when that’s the day many people need it most, as they do gardening or work around the house and have nowhere to take the rubbish.

“Our neighbours in Newtownabbey, which we would be joining under the format contained in the Review of Public Administration, have the Valley Leisure Centre open every Sunday from 9am – 6pm, and the Bruslee amenity centre open on Sundays from 8.30am – 5pm.

“I am aware of the sensitivities around opening council facilities on Sundays and I would not wish to cause anyone undue concern by this proposal; however, I do want to ensure that the rate payers of Antrim receive accessible, responsive and flexible services that meet their needs.

“I have had informal discussion with council officers about the opening hours of the amenity centre. They feel that they could look at the overall opening hours and factor in Sunday opening at no added expense to the rate payer.

“I would be interested to hear any views on this matter either by phone, email or by contacting me on my facebook site.”
