Sheila McQuaid said: “I am absolutely delighted at this news. It brings with it the prospect of many new jobs for the area and also a very significant rates boost for Banbridge District Council and all its people.
“I am hoping for a similarly positive outcome for the ASDA planning application which will bring further similar benefits to the area, in terms of employment. This good news shows that Banbridge is a town going forward very strongly at a time when around the country and further afield the economic situation is particularly difficult. The strategic positioning of Banbridge on the North/South A1 corridor makes it a prime location for business, and this decision regarding Tesco is hopefully the first of many positive news stories about economic development in the area.”
Harry Hamilton said: “The wonderful opportunities for business that the Banbridge area presents are clear to see, with strong infrastructure, easy access to ports, airports and major cities north and south of the border.
“I hope that Tesco also keeps its second store in the town centre along with this new store. I understand the concerns of traders in Banbridge town centre regarding the impact this development might have, but I am very hopeful that this new outlet will compliment the town centre.
“We have to ensure that town centre trade flourishes and continues to be a key driver of economic activity in the area.”
